A development of the Class 04 ‘Drewry’ shunter, construction was shared between British Railways' Swindon Works and Doncaster Works and initial allocations for the class covered all regions except Scotland. Shunting was the main employment, with their short wheelbase and light weight making them particularly useful in areas where weight restrictions or tight trackwork existed. Examples were also assigned to station pilot duties and due to the short wheelbase, it was common for them to be coupled to a ‘shunter’s truck’ or ‘runner wagon’ to ensure sufficient length for reliable operation of track circuits.

Weighing in at 30 Tons, some 18 Tons less than the Class 08 diesel shunter, the Class 03’s were fitted with Gardner engines and their distinctive jackshaft drive arrangement gave the locomotives a top speed of 28½ mph. Despite their usefulness, a downturn in shunting requirements meant that withdrawals began in 1968, although the last remained in service on mainland Britain until 1987. Two examples operated on the Isle of Wight, with lowered cab roofs to account for the restricted loading gauge, and these remained in traffic on the island until 1993. One of these Isle of Wight locos, No. 03179, was resurrected by West Anglia Great Northern in 1998 to shunt their Hornsey Depot. Subsequently operated by First Capital Connect, the loco was finally withdrawn in 2008 after which the locomotive was preserved bringing the total number of surviving examples to 56.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0554/0986/8979/files/IMG_7347_ca530f5b-1f4b-4c64-a7cd-565038c3e2e5.webp?v=1759834986
bachmann-branchline-model-railways-class-03-03056-br-blue-wasp-stripes-copy
Bachmann Branchline Model Railways 16T Steel Slope-Sided Tippler Mineral Wagon BSC Grey With Load

Steel-bodied mineral wagons were developed from the 1930s, with wagon builder Charles Roberts pioneering the slope-sided design. Collett for mixed traffic use. A prototype locomotive was produced in 1924 when Collett modified No. 2925 ‘Saint Martin’ of the Churchward ‘Saint’ Class by fitting smaller driving wheels, realigning the cylinders and fitting a ‘Castle’-style cab. Extensive trials ensued and small modifications were made before orders were placed for the first production series of ‘Hall’ Class locomotives in 1928. The first engine soon emerged, and the class received names of country houses in England and Wales with ‘Hall’ in their titles, so becoming the ‘Hall’ Class.

By all accounts the ‘Halls’ were very successful mixed traffic locomotives, 258 were built and the later-built Stanier 5MT ‘Black Five’ and Thompson B1 – built by the GWR’s competitors the LMS and LNER respectively and both of which were more numerous still – each followed some of the principles employed in the earlier ‘Hall’ Class design.

When the GWR required further mixed traffic locomotives, Collett’s successor Frederick W. Hawksworth modernised the design producing the ‘Modified Hall’ Class and a further 71 locomotives were built between the GWR and BR, with construction continuing until 1950. The vans remained in traffic until the 1980s, with some surviving later still, in departmental use.

The Bachmann Branchline model is highly detailed and carries all the hallmarks of the prototype, from the distinctive roof profile found on many SR vans to the planked panelling – with ‘2+2’ planks on the sides and even planks on the doors – and angled metal framework. Ventilators were fitted along the lower part of the bodysides whilst two pairs of double doors were provided on each side of the van to aid loading and unloading – all are featured on the model including representations of the door locking mechanisms. Four ventilators were also fitted at each end, integrated into the double doors, and these too are modelled accurately. Steps are mounted separately to the solebar, below which the underframe is modelled in all its glory including brake apparatus and separate pipe runs, along with the finely detailed axleboxes into which metal wheelsets are fitted. At each end metal buffers are employed in addition to separate lamp iron brackets and metal handrails. The livery application is crisp and faithful, extending beyond the basic paintwork to numbering and lettering, all reproduced using accurate typefaces and colours.

MODEL FEATURES:

Bachmann Branchline OO Scale

Era 3

Pristine SR Maunsell Green livery

Running No. 1737

Accessory Pack

NEM Coupling Pockets

Close Coupling Mechanism

Length 145mm

The British Railways Mk1 was the designation given to BR’s first standard design of main line coaching stock, and one of its most successful.
